The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has warned against calls for a military coup in Nigeria, saying that it is a treasonable offence.

The warning followed a viral video clip circulating on social media, urging the Nigerian military to take over power from the President Bola Tinubu administration.

Reacting on the development, the military, in a statement on Monday by its Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the military is “steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy and is loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.”

The statement added that the military remains focused on fulfilling its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity and territory.

The DHQ further mandated relevant security agencies in the country to take necessary action against any individual or group “advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country

On the Chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the statement said he is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave.

“AFN is professionally managed and all the service Chiefs are performing their duties as stipulated in the constitution of FGN.

Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu lbrahim, the chief of policy and plans, is providing routine briefs to the COAS in accordance with the standard military procedures.” (News Express)
