The Akwa Ibom State governor, Pastor Umo Eno in a rebirth of annual state sports festival assured that his administration is committed to transforming sports in the state for Youth development and economic growth. This he noted during the opening ceremony of the Akwa Ibom State Youth Sports Festival at Uyo Township Stadium on Monday afternoon.

“The theme of this Year’s festival, ‘Nurturing Talents. Promoting Tourism’, reinforces this vision by positioning sports not only as a tool for youth development but also as a driver of economic growth and tourism.

“Indeed, with facilities like the ARISE Resort and our World Class Stadiums, Akwa Ibom is steadily evolving into a premium destination for sports tourism in Nigeria and West Africa.” The governor was represented by his Deputy, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi.

31 local government areas participated in the opening ceremony march pass led by Chairmen of the various LGA.

A total of 27 sports including 18 individuals sports, 6 team sports and 4 demonstration sport. A total of 1053 medals would be won by participating athletes.

Golf, as a demonstration sport would played at the newly constructed Arise Park. Cricket, Kokowa, and Ayo was also listed among demonstration sport.

Team Uyo defeated rival Ikot Abasi by 2 – 0 in the opening ceremony match. The Uyo council boss, and ALGON Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo made a cash donation of N1 million to boost Uyo contingents moral.
