The former Chairman of Akwa United FC (2008-2016), Obong Isong Isang, was honored with a Posthumous Award by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State chapter last Wednesday in Uyo.
Lady Barr. Ime Isang, widow of Obong Isang, received the award from the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) during the opening ceremony of the 2nd Edition of Obong Isong Isang U17 Memorial Championship at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Chairman emeritus, PSN, Pharmacist Dr. Akwaowo Akpabio and incumbent, Pharmacist Nsikak Effiong jointly presented the award during half-time of the opening games between Pillar Investors and NNS Jubilee Football Academy.
Spectators and dignitaries watched with admiration as late Obong Isong Isang was honored for his service to humanity and grassroots football development. Pharmacist Effiong also made a cash donation for the tournament and wished that some of the U17 football talents would become pharmacists like the late Obong Isong Isang.
Obong Isong Isang, besides his exploits in football, also served as the Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State from 2013-2017.
Speaking during the ceremony, tournament organizers, Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Chairman, Mr. Samuel Umoh promised to enhance training programs and structured pathways.
“We will expand collaboration with international scouting networks to ensure more of our talented players are seen by clubs within and beyond the country,” Mr. Umoh said. He also appreciated Elder Paul Bassey, Commissioner for Sports for ensuring football development through public-private collaboration in Akwa Ibom State.
Paul Bassey thanked Lady Barr. Isang and the Football Association for keeping Isang’s vision alive and announced the Ministry of Sport’s support of N500,000. The former CAF and FIFA administrator, Bassey made a personal donation of N150,000.
Similarly, Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF), Board Member, Rt. Hon. Nse Essien admonished that football should not stop education as he donated N100,000 to the tournament.
The well-organized Memorial Academies Championship also attracted Hon. Engr. Otobong Essien, Chairman of Ikono LGA and friend of the Isong Isang family, as she donated a huge but undisclosed amount to support the teens’ football tournament and education.
