YellowGreens Win Brazil to Clinch Kwibuka T20I Bronze in Kigali Cricket Thrille

Nigeria’s Female YellowGreens ended their campaign at the 2026 Kwibuka Women’s T20I Tournament on a triumphant note, securing the bronze medal with a hard-fought two-wicket victory over Brazil Women at the Gahanga International Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

After a challenging run of results during the tournament, the Nigerian side produced a spirited display in the third-place playoff, overcoming Brazil in a tense contest to finish on the podium and leave Rwanda with a well-deserved medal.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Nigeria delivered a disciplined bowling performance to dismiss Brazil for 85 in their allotted 20 overs. The YellowGreens then navigated a nervy chase, reaching 87 for 8 with four balls remaining to seal victory.

The foundation of the win was laid by an impressive bowling effort led by Player of the Match Christabel Chukwuonye. The all-rounder returned outstanding figures of 3 for 13, including a maiden over, as Brazil struggled to build momentum.

She received strong support from Oseyande Omonkhobho, Shola Adekunle and Rachael Samson, who claimed two wickets apiece, while captain Favour Eseigbe also contributed with a wicket as Nigeria maintained control throughout the innings.

Chasing a modest target, the YellowGreens faced stiff resistance from the Brazilian attack, which struck regularly to keep the contest alive. However, Shola Adekunle’s composed 26 runs provided stability, while skipper Favour Eseigbe remained unbeaten on 19 to guide her side across the finish line and secure third place.

Speaking after the match, Eseigbe said the team approached the playoff with determination after a difficult tournament.

“We had lost about four matches before this game, but we came into the third-place playoff with a lot of belief. We told ourselves it was our final opportunity to leave Rwanda with something to show for our efforts. The girls gave everything, and we’re delighted it paid off.”

The captain credited the victory to a collective team effort rather than individual performances.

“Everyone contributed today. There was constant encouragement among the players, and that made a huge difference. It was truly a team performance. That said, Christabel Chukwuonye deserves special praise. She has been outstanding from the first match to the last and delivered again when it mattered most.”

Eseigbe also expressed gratitude to Nigerian cricket supporters who continued to back the team throughout the competition.

“We appreciate all the support we’ve received. Even when results didn’t go our way, our fans never stopped believing in us. We want to thank them for standing by the team.”

Player of the Match Chukwuonye described her performance as particularly satisfying after battling injuries during the tournament.

“It means a lot because it wasn’t easy. I’ve had injury challenges throughout the competition, but the support and encouragement from my teammates helped me push through and perform.”

The all-rounder also revealed that faith played a key role in helping her remain calm under pressure.

“Whenever I feel tense during a game, I recite a particular Bible verse. It helps me stay calm and focused, and that made a difference today.”

Looking ahead, Chukwuonye believes the lessons learned in Kigali will strengthen the team for future competitions.

“There are plenty of positives to take away from this tournament. We’ll learn from the experience, improve in the areas where we need to get better, and come back stronger.”

The bronze-medal finish underscores the continued progress of Nigerian women’s cricket and highlights the resilience and growing competitiveness of the Female YellowGreens on the international stage.

Beyond the podium finish, the tournament provided valuable experience that will aid the team’s preparations for future regional and global assignments.
