A horrifying case of jungle justice has sparked outrage in Kaduna State after an Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children, identified as Malama Ummulkhairi, was brutally killed and her body set ablaze by a mob in Maraban Jos over a false child theft accusation.
The tragic incident reportedly happened on June 21, 2026, and has once again raised urgent questions about mob violence, false accusations, and the collapse of due process in parts of Nigeria.
According to reports, Malama Ummulkhairi had travelled to attend an Islamic lecture when she became separated from the people she came with. In an effort to find her way, she reportedly approached some local children to ask for directions.
But what should have been a simple request for help allegedly took a deadly turn.
Residents in the area reportedly began spreading claims that she was attempting to steal children, an accusation that quickly triggered panic and anger. Before the truth could be established, the rumour escalated into a life-threatening mob situation.
Police officers reportedly intervened and took the woman into protective custody, apparently in an attempt to shield her from the growing crowd and prevent violence. Family members also tried to identify her and calm the situation, hoping to make it clear that she was not a criminal but a woman who had simply become lost while trying to find her way back.
Their efforts, however, were not enough to stop what followed.
According to reports, an enraged crowd later stormed the police station, overpowered the officers on duty, dragged Malama Ummulkhairi out, and violently killed her. The mob then reportedly set her body on fire, turning a false allegation into a gruesome public execution.
The killing of the Islamic teacher — a mother of more than five children — has sent shockwaves across the state and drawn widespread condemnation from those demanding justice.
In its reaction, the Kaduna State Police Command described the attack as a barbaric act of jungle justice and confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the murder. The command also pledged to ensure that everyone involved in the attack is identified, tracked down, and prosecuted according to the law.
The case has reignited concern over the deadly consequences of misinformation and mob action in Nigeria, where false accusations can spread within minutes and cost innocent people their lives before any investigation is carried out.
For many, the killing of Malama Ummulkhairi is not just another crime story — it is a devastating reminder of what can happen when fear, rumour, and lawlessness overpower reason, evidence, and justice.
An innocent woman reportedly asked for directions. Instead of receiving help, she was accused, hunted, dragged from police protection, murdered, and burned.
Now, a family has been shattered, children have lost their mother, and a community is left confronting the brutal consequences of a lie that turned fatal.
