Put an insecure man in a uniform, give him a little power, hand him a gun and handcuffs, tell him to hide his face — then send him into the public to arrest fellow citizens for comments made on social media — and you have just produced the most damaging anti-government footage any opposition leader could ever dream of.
The scenes circulating globally of the DSS abduction of Omoyele Sowore inside the Federal High Court in Abuja are deeply disturbing to me — and I am a hardened veteran of Nigerian governmental madness. Armed, fully kitted DSS operatives stormed the courtroom, physically separated Sowore from his legal representatives, and bundled him into a waiting convoy of armored vehicles — all because he called Bola Tinubu what the evidence suggests he is: a criminal.
I can assure President Tinubu that the videos now circulating across Europe, the United States, the Far East, and Africa represent the single worst public relations catastrophe of his already deeply tainted presidency.
Sowore is being prosecuted on cybercrime charges for publicly describing Tinubu as “a criminal.” That is the threshold for imprisonment in Tinubu’s Nigeria. A social media post. The architecture of repression is now complete.
This outrage, compounded by the continuing detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and the systematic judicial harassment of every credible opposition voice, has cemented an international consensus: Tinubu is a bona fide dictator, dismantling democratic institutions to consolidate power for himself, his family, and their network of cronies — and using brute force to do it.
Sources allege the entire operation is being coordinated by Tinubu’s own Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, reportedly motivated by a longstanding personal grievance against Sowore. This is not justice. This is a vendetta dressed in the robes of the law.
This reckless behaviour is ammunition for those of us who have long documented Tinubu’s history of involvement in narcotics, his 1993 asset forfeiture to U.S. federal authorities, and his serial disregard for constitutional order. The blatancy of what is unfolding now is staggering even by Nigerian standards.
Let it be clearly stated: paying militants in the Niger Delta, arming area boys in Lagos, financing criminals in Kano and Benin — none of it will purchase a second term. Tinubu is stirring a pot of oil so hot it will boil over and scald him worst of all. He is an old man clinging to power, surrounded by rogues who are exploiting his addiction to office to enrich themselves at every turn — while he sits in Aso Rock asleep at security briefings.
He has shown the world what he truly is.
And history’s verdict on men who live by the sword is unambiguous.
