The NDC-Peter Obi Support Network (NDC-POSN) has expressed concern over what it described as the alleged harassment and intimidation of the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to investigate the claims and safeguard democratic rights.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the group said it was reacting to comments made by Obi during an interview on the “With Chude” programme hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo.
According to the support group, Obi alleged that he has been subjected to persistent intimidation and deliberate attempts to frustrate his personal and professional activities. He also expressed fears about his safety ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former Anambra State governor was quoted as saying that the current political climate had raised concerns about whether he would be alive to contest the next presidential election, alleging that government actions had continued to obstruct his livelihood and daily activities.
Obi also cited an incident at an airport where he claimed his vehicle was locked while others were not, and further alleged that some of his associates now avoid publicly identifying with him or inviting him to private events for fear of possible repercussions.
Describing the allegations as disturbing, NDC-POSN said any form of intimidation, harassment or interference targeting opposition figures poses a threat to Nigeria’s democratic process and constitutional freedoms.
The group declared its solidarity with Obi and the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, insisting that all political actors should be allowed to participate freely in the nation’s democratic process without fear or intimidation.
It called on the Federal Government to conduct a transparent investigation into the allegations and ensure that no individual or institution engages in actions capable of undermining lawful political participation.
The support network also urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to provide adequate protection for Obi, his family and other political stakeholders, while calling on all democratic institutions to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights and guarantee a credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reaffirming its commitment to supporting the presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the group said it would continue to mobilise supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora through peaceful and lawful means.
NDC-POSN also appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm, law-abiding and focused, expressing confidence that democratic principles and the will of the electorate would ultimately prevail.
