Peter Obi Condemns Arrest of Prof. Martin Aghaji, Demands Respect for Rule of Law and Human Dignity
Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has condemned the manner in which renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and academic, Professor Martin Aghaji, was apprehended by security operatives, describing the incident as a disturbing example of disregard for human dignity and the rule of law.
In a statement, Obi expressed dismay over reports that the 74-year-old medical expert was arrested at about 2 a.m. at his residence in Independent Layout, Enugu, in the presence of his visiting daughter. According to him, Professor Aghaji was neither invited nor contacted before security operatives allegedly stormed his home, took him into custody, and transported him to Lagos, only for authorities to later admit that his arrest was a mistake.

Obi said the treatment meted out to the respected surgeon was unacceptable, stressing that Professor Aghaji’s age, distinguished career, and immense contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare sector deserved respect. He added that every Nigerian, regardless of profession or social status, is entitled to dignity and due process under the law.
He argued that the public reaction to the incident reflects growing concern over the conduct of security agencies and their treatment of citizens. According to him, such actions not only undermine confidence in state institutions but also risk worsening Nigeria’s healthcare challenges by discouraging highly skilled professionals from remaining in the country.
Drawing parallels with a similar incident involving a medical practitioner in Akwa Ibom State, Obi recalled that the Nigeria Medical Association had considered a nationwide strike before a public apology was eventually issued to the affected doctor following swift intervention.
He warned that treating respected professionals and law-abiding citizens as criminals without due process sets a dangerous precedent that weakens the rule of law and erodes public trust in government institutions.
Obi called on security agencies and public officials to discharge their responsibilities with civility, professionalism, and respect for the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, insisting that building a better and more just nation remains possible.
