The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has condemned what he described as “inflammatory” and “threat-laden” remarks allegedly made by Senator Francis Fadahunsi ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X handle, expressed concern that the remarks could heighten political tensions, intimidate voters and potentially trigger electoral violence.
The former Anambra State governor called on Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East in the National Assembly, to immediately withdraw the comments and apologise to the people of Osun State.
“As a high-ranking lawmaker representing the people in the National Assembly, Senator Fadahunsi carries a solemn constitutional and moral responsibility to promote peace, uphold democratic norms, and foster unity,” Obi said.
He described it as “alarming and unacceptable” for a serving senator to allegedly resort to intimidation, incendiary remarks or political threats capable of creating fear among voters.
According to Obi, elections should provide citizens with a peaceful avenue to freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment or coercion.
“Resorting to threats of force or disruption undermines the integrity of our electoral process, disrespects the electorate, and threatens the fragile peace of the state,” he said.
Obi also urged political leaders, party supporters and other stakeholders to moderate their language, exercise restraint and uphold democratic decorum before, during and after the election.
He called on security agencies to closely monitor inflammatory statements and ensure equal protection for voters, election officials and other citizens throughout the electoral process.
“The democratic mandate belongs to the people, and no individual, regardless of status or political office, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion,” Obi said.
The NDC presidential candidate further urged the people of Osun State to remain calm and peaceful while exercising their constitutional right to vote.
He stressed that credible and peaceful elections were essential to building what he described as a “New Nigeria that is Possible.”
