The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has formally presented the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Gregory Obi, as the “Candidate of Conscience” as campaigns for the 2027 presidential election officially commence.

In a statement signed by the POMR Spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr., on Wednesday, the media office urged Nigerians to pay close attention to Obi’s message and assess all presidential candidates based on their records, ideas, competence and character.

According to the statement, the 2026 Electoral Act provides for the commencement of presidential campaigns ahead of the January 2027 election, marking the beginning of an intensive 150-day campaign period.

The media office described the period as critical to Nigeria’s democratic future, saying the election would determine not only who occupies the presidency but also the direction the country takes in the years ahead.

It framed the contest as a choice between what it described as “old habits of waste, division, and broken promises” and a new direction anchored on competence, accountability, productivity and hope.

The statement said Obi’s campaign would focus on transforming Nigeria “from consumption to production,” reducing the cost of governance, strengthening education and healthcare, improving national security and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.

It described the former Anambra State governor as a politician whose public identity is associated with prudence, fiscal discipline and accountability, adding that his political message is centred on the belief that government should serve citizens rather than political interests.

“Calling a political leader a ‘candidate of conscience’ recognises an operational standard rooted in integrity, frugality, and accountability,” the statement said.

The POMR maintained that Obi would seek votes without appealing to ethnic, religious or regional sentiments, insisting that Nigerians should judge him on his record, ideas and vision.

It further said Obi believes leadership should be measured by competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment rather than ethnicity or political entitlement.

According to the statement, the former Anambra governor’s campaign would also emphasise restoring trust between government and citizens, fighting corruption through transparency, investing in productive sectors and ensuring that public resources are deployed for the benefit of Nigerians.

“This is more than a campaign for votes. It is a call to Nigerians who believe that public office should be an instrument of service, not personal enrichment; that leadership should unite rather than divide; and that every child, regardless of birthplace or background, deserves the opportunity to succeed,” the statement added.

The media office urged Nigerians to scrutinise the records and policy proposals of all candidates during the campaign, rather than being swayed by slogans, propaganda, fear or primordial sentiments.

It said the coming months would provide voters with an opportunity to assess which candidate possesses the capacity and integrity required to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, unemployment and institutional weaknesses.

The statement also reiterated Obi’s position that governance should not be treated as a personal inheritance or reward for political loyalty, but as a responsibility that must be earned through competence, character and measurable results.

“The crucial question before every Nigerian is simple: Who can be trusted to lead Nigeria towards unity, accountability, prosperity, and hope?” it asked.

The POMR concluded by calling on Nigerians to listen to Obi and assess his message alongside those of other presidential contenders before making their choice at the polls.

“We present to you the man who is willing and prepared to reset our country for a journey to greatness. He is Peter (Okwute) Gregory Obi. Listen to him,” the statement said.
