The Unity Torch for the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival arrived Uyo on Tuesday evening and was met with a passionate reception party despite delaying into the night.
The Chairman of Uyo, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo welcomed the torch bearers in the company of Dr. Anieti Udofia, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism.
Dr. Udofia, a State Executive Member and also an Uyo indigene, presented the Torch on behalf of the Central Working Committe of the Akwa Ibom State Youth Sports Festival to the Uyo Council boss.
Dr. Udo, in his remarks, thanked the Ministry of Sport delegation for their visit and planning the festival that will offer opportunities of greatness to the youths.
“I want to commend his Excellency, the governor, Pastor Umo Eno PhD, for the idea to bring everyone together, providing enabling environment for our sport people to ply their trade and to be discovered.
“For us in Uyo, we are prepared and also confident that our sports men and women will make us proud by winning medals for Uyo LGA. We all have a duty to encourage our athletes to win and bring honours to our local government. We are competing to win.”
The Chairman further assured Ministry of Sports delegation of his administration’s readiness to support and cooperate with the Festival Organisers to ensure the highest standards during the competition.
The Chairman was joined by the Council Vice Chairman, Hon. Christiana Bassey, Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, Secretary of Council, Mr. Ubong Udofia, Supervisor for Sports Development, Mr. Aniedi Okon, management, staff and many other dignitaries from Uyo.
