A disturbing case of child abuse has emerged in Calabar, Cross River State, involving a little girl named Edidiong, who is under seven years old. According to reports, Mrs Unyime Bassey, of number 8 Stream Road, Atimbo, allegedly beat the child severely.

Edidiong works as a nanny for Mrs Bassey’s youngest child, Blessing, who is the same age as her. Neighbours say the girl is frequently punished for minor mistakes and is often beaten severely. The latest incident reportedly occurred after Edidiong was accused of taking meat from the family pot of soup. Neighbours described this recent beating as “mild” compared to previous incidents.

All of Mrs Bassey’s other children attend school, but Edidiong does not. The case has caused outrage in the community, especially given that Mrs Bassey and her husband are pastors.

The matter has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force, Airport Division, Calabar. Human rights activists and organisations, including Basic Rights Council, are being called upon to intervene and ensure justice for Edidiong.
