The Citizens’ Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has praised the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for responding to its request under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, describing the agency’s action as a positive demonstration of transparency and accountability.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, CASER said NIMASA provided a substantial volume of the information and documents it requested pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, in line with the organisation’s commitment to promoting good governance in public institutions.
The civil society organisation said the response reflects NIMASA’s respect for the provisions of the FOI Act and signals the agency’s willingness to engage constructively with civil society on issues of public interest.
According to the statement signed by the Executive Director and Lead Advocate of CASER, Frank Tietie, the organisation has commenced a detailed review and analysis of the documents received.
CASER noted that given the volume and significance of the materials supplied, its assessment would be thorough, objective and comprehensive. It added that it would make its findings public after completing the review and, where necessary, issue recommendations or take further steps in the public interest.
The organisation described the Freedom of Information Act as a critical tool for strengthening democratic governance and enhancing public confidence in government institutions.
It also urged other public institutions to emulate NIMASA by responding promptly and fully to lawful requests for information.
CASER expressed appreciation to the management of NIMASA for its cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement aimed at promoting transparency, institutional accountability and the rule of law.
