As the world gathers to celebrate the International Day of the African Child 2023, which is annually celebrated on June 16th to commemorate the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa, when thousands of black school children took to the streets to protest the inferior quality of their education and demanded their right to be taught in their own language.

The day serves as a reminder of the importance of improving the quality of education and ensuring the protection of the rights of children in Africa.

The theme of today’s celebration is “Education for Empowerment: Unlocking the Future.” It emphasizes the transformative power of education in shaping the lives of millions of African children.

The need for accessible, quality education that equips children with the necessary knowledge, skills, and opportunities required to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities is one of the main purposes of this theme.

Speaking to Crossfire Reports, Princess Auguster Oguinede said, “the importance of the International Day of the African Child lies in its ability to raise awareness about the challenges that children in Africa face, including poverty, lack of access to education and healthcare, child labor, and exploitation.

“By highlighting these issues, the day encourages individuals, organizations, and governments to take action to improve the lives of children in Africa.

“It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and potential of African children and to recognize their contributions to their communities and societies.

“This celebration also highlights the need to accelerate the implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2040, which is a framework that aims to promote the well-being of children in Africa by addressing issues such as child health, education, protection, and participation.

In conclusion,  she wished all African Children a happy International African Child Day, 2023.
