The Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta, Dr Michael Tidi has warned residents within the Pessu Market axis against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the Warri water channel. Tidi gave the warning on Saturday while supervising the monthly environmental sanitation programme in Warri.

Tidi, who led other members of his cabinet that included the Vice Chairman Mrs Divine Iniovosa on the inspection tour, also lamented the non compliance of the residents to environmental sanitation directives. While inspecting the ongoing reconstruction of Pessu Market Road being done by the State government, the council boss said that the disposal of waste was a responsibility between government and the governed.

Tidi stressed that the act of dumping refuse on the water channel was counter-productive to government’s determination to revive commercial activities in Pessu Market and its environs. Tidi, however, commended Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa for reconstructing the Pessu Market Road noting that, it would revive commercial activities in the oil-rich city when completed.

“I am particularly delighted because the road project was my recommendation when the governor came to Warri in 2018 to hold a town hall meeting.

“Environmental law in Nigeria is very weak. “My administration will introduce Executive Bill to Warri South Council Legislature with a view to enacting a bye-law that will give bite to the enforcement of sanitation law.

“I enjoined security agencies to step up their game as it concerns restricition on movement on environmental sanitation days,” Tidi said.

Reports said that Officers of Warri South Local Government Council, evacuated refuse at Odion Road, Warri-Sapele Road, Garage, Market Road, Cemetry Road and Okere Market to Estate Round-About.
