The Annual Government College Ughelli – GCU RELAYS within the week got a massive shot in the arm, which invariably translates to a tremendous Game Changer, with the emergence of dominant domestic Airline, Arik Air as the Presenting Sponsor for the fifth edition of the Inter Collegiate Athletics Event.

Almost Immediately, Ancient Mariner Sir (Engr) Joseph Arumemi – Ikhide (1963 Class) has also thrown massive support to the Delivery of the 2023 edition.

In the same vein, the immediate Past PGWW Arc. Charles Majoroh has consummated the March Past Winner Award with the donation of a Trophy and monetary benefit, just as the End-of-Event Bonfire Party.

An elated PGWW Chief Albert Akpomudje was full of gratitude last night, as the support for the GCU RELAYS kept pouring in, whilst still being expectant of more support and contribution to the Relays.

“We are full of gratitude to our first Presenting Sponsors, Arik Air, Ancient Mariners Sir Joseph Arumemi – Ikhide and my predecessor Arc. Charles Majoroh ” he began, adding “and to the likes of Alfred Okoigun (Arco Group) Spencer Onosode (Pillar Oil & GAMSU Foundation) and Clement Djebah. They have exceeded my expectations”.

Whilst these tremendous support and goodwill is being extended to the GCU Relays, the President of the National Association of Athletics Technical Officials, NAATO, Prince D.U.E Etene has solicited additional support for the Relays, urging that the Event be listed amongst the Calendar Programme of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN.

“It will be fitting to have the GCU Relays listed in the AFN Calendar as we have the Sir Awoture Eleyae Invitation Athletics Meet” he said, adding “Good enough your invited Special Guest and Chairman of both AFN and Delta State Sports Commission ,Tonobok Okowa will be at the Finals which means that this request can be officially presented to him in person “, the Delta NAATO Chief urged.

Consistently, the Founders of the “Making of Champions” have shown presence at the GCU Relays.

A Cardinal Objective of the GCU Relays is the fresh awakening of the Inter Collegiate Athletics Rivalry amongst Secondary School Athletes, pan Nigeria.
The 5th anniversary edition is confirmed for Saturday, November 18th 2023 at the GCU Tartan Tracks, with over 50 Schools and 500 athletes expected at the Finals
