Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Chris Ngige, former governor of Anambra and ex-minister of labour and employment, along the Nkpor–Nnobi road, Idemili North LGA.

The Cable understands that the former minister was not in the convoy when the incident happened.

According to reports, the gunmen were dressed in police and army uniforms and shot a lady recording the attack.

A shop owner who raced to inquire what was happening was also shot, alongside a policeman in the pilot car, while his uniform and gun were reportedly taken away by the assailants.

Witnesses said the pilot car was riddled with bullets but noted that the police officer and two others who were shot did not die.

Ikenga Tochukwu, police spokesperson in Anambra, who confirmed the incident on Thursday, said operatives recovered a white Mercedes-Benz SUV the gunmen snatched during the attack.

“The recovered vehicle has been secured and taken into police custody for further investigation, while the operatives have stepped up a coordinated statewide manhunt for the fleeing armed hoodlums,” the statement reads.

Tochukwu said further developments would be communicated.
