The Executive Chairman of Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Larai Sylvia Ishaku, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Nurse Mary Habila, expressing sympathy over her tragic death and calling for support for the bereaved family.
During the visit on Wednesday, Ishaku met with the family at their residence in Nok Community, Jaba LGA, where she described the deceased as a promising young professional whose life was cut short at the peak of her career.
According to the family, Mary Habila was a staff member of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State, and had served for more than three years as part of the medical team attached to the residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Speaking during the visit, Mary’s father, Baba Habila, said the minister and his family had maintained a cordial relationship with his daughter and other members of the medical team throughout her service.
He disclosed that before her death, Mary had informed her fiancé during a telephone conversation that she suffered a nosebleed the previous night.
Baba Habila explained that on the morning of June 27, 2026, Mary’s colleagues became worried after she failed to appear for breakfast. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach her, they reportedly forced open the door to her room and found her lifeless on the floor.
He said the Minister of Works was immediately informed, after which security agencies visited the scene and her remains were taken to the morgue.
The bereaved father stated that he had chosen not to request an autopsy, saying his decision was based on the belief that no medical examination could bring his daughter back to life. He also stressed that he bears no resentment towards the Minister of Works or his family, expressing confidence that his daughter lived an honourable and responsible life.
He appealed to the public to refrain from spreading speculation about the circumstances surrounding Mary’s death and urged people to allow her to rest in peace.
Baba Habila also called on the relevant security authorities in Ebonyi State to release his daughter’s remains to the family to enable them to give her a dignified burial in accordance with their customs and traditions.
In her remarks, Ishaku extended her heartfelt condolences to the Habila family, praying that God grants them the strength to bear the painful loss and eternal rest to the soul of the deceased.
The appeal for the release of Mary’s body comes as public interest in the circumstances surrounding her death remains high, with investigations by security agencies still ongoing.
