The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of repeatedly making promises it has failed to fulfil, urging Nigerians to be wary of what it described as “deceptive assurances” from the Federal Government.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Osa Director, alleged that the government had yet to honour financial rewards and housing promises made to the Super Falcons and D’Tigress despite publicly celebrating their achievements.
According to the NDC, members of the Super Falcons and their officials are still awaiting the payment of the promised $100,000 cash reward and a house each following their triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Nigeria won a record-extending 10th continental title after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in a dramatic final.
The party noted that with the next WAFCON tournament scheduled to begin on July 26, 2026, the government’s failure to fulfil its pledge could affect the morale of the players.
The statement referenced comments by Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who reportedly disclosed that the promised rewards had yet to be received.
The NDC also claimed that members of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, remain unpaid despite similar promises of $100,000, houses and plots of land after their achievements. It further alleged that land documents presented to the team during a training camp in Montpellier, France, in March 2026 had not translated into actual benefits.
Beyond sports, the opposition party criticised the Federal Government over plans to increase the cost of national secondary school examination fees by 82 percent. It argued that the proposal contradicted President Tinubu’s 2022 campaign promise to pay examination fees for every Nigerian child.
The party claimed that the proposed fee increase was only reconsidered following widespread public opposition.
The NDC urged Nigerians to “distance themselves from fake promises” and to continue expressing their opposition through peaceful and lawful means.
