The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has insisted that it remains a valid political party despite the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, assuring members and supporters that its operations remain unaffected.
Speaking during an interview, the party’s National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan (Enekweizu), said the court’s ruling did not amount to the deregistration of the NDC. According to him, the judgment only set aside an earlier order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the party and did not issue any order dissolving or deregistering it.
Barr. Ikenna maintained that the NDC would continue to conduct its lawful activities nationwide, stressing that no court order has restrained the party from operating. He urged members, supporters and candidates to remain calm and stay focused.
He disclosed that the party has already instructed its legal team to challenge the Lokoja judgment at the Court of Appeal, expressing confidence that the appellate court would overturn what the party considers legal errors in the ruling and reaffirm the NDC’s rights.
On preparations for future elections, the National Secretary assured all NDC candidates that they have no cause for concern. He said the party remains committed to participating fully in the 2027 general elections and is confident its candidates will be on the ballot while preparations continue despite the ongoing legal challenge.
Barr. Ikenna also suggested that the timing of the judgment appeared aimed at disrupting the party’s preparations for the elections. However, he insisted that the NDC would not be deterred and would continue to pursue all lawful avenues to defend democracy, protect the rights of its members, and uphold what it described as the will of the Nigerian people.
