Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, has affirmed that Gov. Umo Eno’s sports renaissance in the state is not only xoncerned with laying a springboard to boost sports tourism and economic growth but has scholarships for exceptional talents.
“There is a plan for general athletes who are doing well. Look at the athletes who came back from Asaba, His Excellency would decide, find out from them – are they in school? What can we do for them in terms of scholarship for them to be sustained?
“Is the person in a local government that is far flung where he or she may not have the benefit of equipment and facilities? I think it is proper we negotiate that those athletes be brought to Uyo, Eket, or Ikot Ekpene where they can have facilities to train. That is the way to go.”
The renowned sport administrator, Paul ‘Sport’ Bassey, at the Nest of Champions on Thursday, confirmed plans by Akwa Ibom State government state to employ coaches who are updated with modern rules and regulations.
As the Akwa Ibom State sports festival enters the business end, Itu and Uyo LGA hauling medals with fierce competition. However, the state medalists from Asaba National Youth Games 2025 may have a surprise package from Gov. Eno, who is proud of the to state contingent performance at the 9th National Youth Games in Delta State.
