Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the re-election of the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri as the validly elected governor of the state.

A five-member panel of the apex court, in a judgment, dismissed in its entirety the appeal filed by Diri’s major opponent and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Timipre Sylva.

Sylva had challenged the outcome of the November 2023 off-cycle poll in the state.

Delivering judgment on the Sylva’s appeal, Justice Lawal Garba, who led the panel, upheld the Court of Appeal decision of July 18.

The appellate court had dismissed Sylva’s appeal as “an abuse of court processes” for filing two notices of appeal.
