One person was reportedly killed in Bayelsa State on Sunday during the State Assembly primary election conducted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 24 state constituencies in the state.

The victim, who was identified as Michael Isaiah, also known as ‘Tompolo’, was shot dead at Constituency One in the Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that violence broke out following a heated argument over the validity of the delegates list to be used for voting in the constituency, which resulted in sporadic shootings.

A leading aspirant for the Ogbia Federal Constituency ticket of the PDP, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, condemned the murder of Michael Isaiah during the party’s primary election in Ogbia area.

Iworiso-Markson, in a statement released in Yenagoa, said the killing of Isaiah was barbaric and sad, stating that nobody’s life is worth taking for any political office.

He called on security agents to go after the killers and their desperate sponsors, insisting that those responsible must not go unpunished.

Iworiso-Markson, a former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, while expressing deep sadness over the incident, commiserated with the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served in the matter.

The House of Representatives hopeful said, “Violence is not our culture. Personally, I do not subscribe to violence. That is why all through my consultations and reach out with stakeholders and delegates I made it clear that I will not do anything to undermine the peace and unity in Ogbia.

“It is indeed very sad and I call on security agents to do everything possible to arrest and prosecute those behind it. I also sympathize with the bereaved families over this avoidable loss,” he added.

When contacted, the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said he was away attending a course in Lagos and promised to get back on the alleged killing of Michael Isaiah. He was yet to do so as at the time of filing this report.
