Timothy Zechariah, the Player of the Match winner, received accolades from coaches and teammates for his outstanding performance, which contributed to Rivers United’s 3-1 victory over Black Bulls of Mozambique.
In a post match press conference at the Nest of Champions, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Coach Finidi George stated, “following the first game, we recognized that BlackBulls employ a 3-5-2 wing-back formation. We required a skilled dribbler capable of taking on players, as we had injuries to our natural wingers. We decided to position Timothy on the left side and Ubong Friday on the right side. You witnessed the penalty he created. We are thrilled with the victory.”
The ecstatic Timothy was pleased that the result came after Coach Finidi’s instructions were executed on the pitch.
“I was delighted when instructed to play on the wings. I told my friend we would emerge victorious. I predicted I would provide two assists and score a goal.”
After Wasiu Falolu’s 15th-minute goal, Timothy attempted to dribble deep but was tackled within the box by Black Bulls’ defense, resulting in a penalty for Rivers United. Maclyn Jenwari scored the second goal just before the break.

Two minutes into the second half, Black Bulls forward Moctar Diallo scored, causing panic among the home team. However, Timothy’s confidence and adherence to instructions within the opponent’s box created an opportunity for Rivers’ third goal.
Rivers United have advanced to the Group stage of the CAF Champions League, positioning themselves for intercontinental football history.
The team will celebrate until the draws reveal their next opponent. Meanwhile, Coach Finidi George expressed renewed confidence, stating that the team is prepared to face any opponent. “Our target is to await the draws and approach each game as it comes.”
Rivers United are exploring options to acquire additional top players to bolster their squad for the CAF Champions League.
