The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has placed the enforcement of vehicle tinted glass permits on hold following a court directive halting the operation.
The federal high court sitting in Warri, Delta state, last week directed the NPF and the inspector-general of police (IGP) to suspend the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit nationwide.
In its interim ruling, the court instructed the police authorities to maintain the status quo and respect ongoing judicial processes until the case is further heard.
The order was issued during proceedings in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, filed by a legal practitioner, John Aikpokpo-Martins, against the IGP and NPF.
The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, made this known during a live appearance on AIT on Wednesday.
According to Adeh, the directive came shortly after the police formally received the court document ordering the halt.
“Information reaching me from the office of the PRO indicates that the order has been received, and the enforcement of the tinted glass permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict,” she stated.
She added that the suspension would remain in place until the judiciary concludes the ongoing legal process.
“We are awaiting the verdict. We are not in conflict with the courts, and we will maintain this position until a judgment is delivered,” Adeh noted.
Responding to questions about the rationale behind the regulation, Adeh explained that the policy was established for security purposes.
She pointed out that criminals had previously used vehicles with darkened windows to perpetrate crimes, making it difficult for officers to identify those involved.
“The law was not made by the police; we only enforce it. The policy was purely security-oriented. Some offenders used tinted vehicles to commit crimes, and this hindered law enforcement efforts,” she explained.
The police spokesperson further dismissed claims that the initiative was a revenue-generating scheme for the force.
She clarified that all payments for tinted glass permits are made directly into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account, not through any police channel.
