The Association of Practicing Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) in Akwa Ibom State led by the President, Mrs. Sarah Akpan has shown their support to Gov. Umo Eno’s health reforms to ensure Akwa Ibom citizens enjoy quality health care services.

The group leaders from different Senatorial Districts, alongside partners from the Human Rights Community on Thursday, paid an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John, at his office in Uyo

“We are aware of the State of Emergency on the health sector and the lofty programs to benefit Akwa Ibom citizens. Our visit is to ensure that we are not the weakest links in the chain of progress.

“We have a membership strength of over 4000 in the 31 LGAs of Akwa Ibom State. We plan to propagate the good gesture of Gov. Eno and ensure all pregnant women in the hinterlands benefit.”

Mrs. Akpan, however, solicited the Commissioner to engage her members in updated modern techniques and equipment support.

“We need training on current methods, tests, and care for pregnant women. We also require the government to give apparatus, consumables, and technical equipment to assist us in caring for pregnant women in the villages.”

A delegation of The Human Rights Community in Akwa Ibom State was led by Barr. Clifford Thomas, who facilitated the meeting, said they were motivated to join the interface because of the need to protect human rights.

“Where life is concerned, where human rights are concerned, we always fly our flag. That is why we are here, and we thank you (Commissioner) for the privileged opportunity to meet with you.”

Responding, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John unveiled more health packages for Akwa Ibom State citizens through traditional birth attendants.

“Gov. Umo Eno plans to train and make traditional Birth Attendants earn money from each birth they guide through referral centers. The government is interested in a drastical reduction of complications and death among pregnant women due to the incapabilities of some birth attendants.”

The Commissioner also expected all traditional birth attendants to be registered by January 2026.

“Before the end of 2025, we will create a department of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. Registered birth attendants would be issued identification cards and other incentives to operate.”

According to the Health Commissioner, traditional birth attendants in the state would be expected to manage the ante natal stage of pregnancy and make delivery at designated referral clinics in their locality.
