Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled an attempted infiltration by suspected ISWAP terrorists into Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing several insurgents and uncovering evidence suggesting the involvement of foreign terrorist facilitators.
According to the military, the attack occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, when the insurgents attempted to exploit the cover of darkness to overrun the troops’ position. However, soldiers of the 19 Brigade, Sector 3, detected the movement early and responded with overwhelming firepower, forcing the terrorists to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
The military disclosed that the attackers were believed to have targeted cholera medical supplies, a development it said lends further credence to recent intelligence indicating a cholera outbreak within ISWAP enclaves. The intelligence also suggested that some infected members of the terrorist group had reportedly been executed by their own commanders.

A major breakthrough during the operation was the recovery of a Sony camcorder from a slain terrorist cameraman. The military said preliminary forensic analysis of the device revealed operational footage and propaganda materials, including evidence that the failed attack was coordinated by four senior ISWAP commanders alongside three foreign terrorist facilitators.
Among those identified were a Palestinian identified as Abu Ishaq, believed to be ISWAP’s chief trainer, and a Moroccan identified as Abu Thaiba, reportedly serving as a medical doctor within the terrorist network. A third Arab operative was also captured in the footage, although his identity has yet to be established.
The military noted that the findings reinforce existing intelligence that ISWAP continues to receive external support, technical expertise and transnational assistance.
Following the successful defence of the location, troops conducted exploitation operations across the area, recovering the camcorder, several rounds of PKT and 7.62mm Special ammunition, terrorist uniforms and other combat equipment.
According to the military, post-engagement satellite imagery showed insurgents evacuating the bodies of their dead fighters during the withdrawal. The assessment was later corroborated by credible human intelligence sources, which confirmed that the terrorists suffered significant casualties, while many others sustained gunshot wounds.
The operation, however, left two soldiers wounded. Both personnel were airlifted for advanced medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Operation HADIN KAI described the failed assault as another major setback for ISWAP, saying the outcome reflects the increasing effectiveness of sustained military offensives across the North-East.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on terrorist groups, protecting vulnerable communities and dismantling insurgent networks until lasting peace and security are restored across the region.
