Valentine Ozigbo, a respected philanthropist, international business leader, and inspirational political figure, was in Awka on Saturday, December 2, 2023, in solidarity with the Tansi International College community as he attended the burial mass for three students who tragically lost their lives in a recent incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the sad event happened when lightning struck nine male students who were playing football on the school’s football field, leaving three dead. The deceased are Obi Francis Chukwunwuike, Obeta Michael Uchechukwu and Usulor Chidubem Emmanuel.

The sombre mass, held at the school premises, brought together grieving families, friends, and members of the school community to bid farewell to the young lives cut short too soon.

Several members of the clergy attended the event, including Revd. Fr. Fidelis Izuakor, the principal; Rev. Fr. Patrick Nweke, the Vice Principal (Academic); Fr. Patrick Ifewulum, the spiritual director; Rev. Greg Anosike, the Dean of Student Affairs; Rev. Fr. Martins Nwakaeze, who took the sermon, and Rev. Fr. Maximus Okonkwo, the education secretary who represented Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor of Awka Diocese.

In a statement made available to the press, Mr. Ozigbo conveyed his deepest sympathies, praying for God to console the bereaved, emphasizing the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of adversity.

“My heart aches for the families who have lost their beloved children in this unthinkable tragedy. No words can adequately express the pain of such a loss. As a community, we must unite to support one another during these difficult times,” Ozigbo remarked.

“In times of grief, it is crucial for communities to stand together. We must lean on one another for strength and support as we navigate through the pain and sorrow that comes with losing young lives full of promise.”

Acknowledging the resilience of the Tansi International College community, Ozigbo added, “The strength displayed by the students, parents, and the school management in the face of this tragedy is truly inspiring. It is a testament to the unity and spirit that defines this community. We must continue to support each other and work towards healing.”

“May the memories of these young lives serve as a reminder of the preciousness of every moment. Together, let us honour their legacy by working towards creating a safer and more compassionate world for our children,” Ozigbo added.
