The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday successfully concluded its nationwide presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly primaries, with massive participation recorded across the country.
A statement signed by Osa Director Esq., MDC’s National Publicity Secretary on May 29, 2026 said the exercise, which began Thursday, May 28th through Friday May 29th saw members and supporters trooping out in large numbers in various states to take part in the direct primaries, in what many observers described as a major demonstration of the growing popularity and grassroots acceptance of the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite initial logistical concerns caused by the Eid-el-Kabir holidays and transportation challenges across the country, the exercise proceeded smoothly and peacefully in most states, with enthusiastic participation from party faithful.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security agencies, including the Police and DSS, monitored the exercise across several locations to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and maintain public order.
Reports from across the federation indicated that voting and affirmation processes were orderly, transparent, and well coordinated, while party stakeholders commended the maturity displayed by aspirants and supporters throughout the exercise.
In spite of the challenges experienced in some locations, observers and supporters hailed the process and expressed gratitude to the leadership of the party for allowing aspirants to participate in the primaries before purchasing nomination forms, a process many described as the first of its kind in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Supporters noted that the approach introduced by the NDC was aimed at deepening internal democracy and creating a more inclusive platform for participation. In line with this arrangement, nomination forms will only be sold to successful candidates who emerge from the primaries.
The atmosphere at many voting centres was festive, with chants, solidarity songs, and jubilant supporters expressing confidence in the party’s vision and leadership.
Party leaders described the successful conduct of the primaries as another major milestone in the steady growth of the NDC as a formidable national political movement committed to democratic participation, credible leadership, and national renewal.
The National Working Committee of the party is expected to conclude collation of results from the states before making official announcements from the national headquarters.
The large turnout witnessed during the primaries reflects increasing public interest in the NDC and may further strengthen the party’s momentum ahead of future electoral contests.
