Fresh consultations are underway among prominent opposition figures as efforts intensify to forge a stronger and more coordinated political front ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
The G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians, is reportedly engaging leaders and representatives of major opposition political parties in a bid to promote greater cooperation and reduce divisions within the opposition camp.
As part of the ongoing consultations, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are expected to participate in a major opposition summit scheduled for August 18 in Abuja.
The proposed summit is expected to provide a platform for the opposition leaders and other stakeholders to discuss possible areas of cooperation and explore ways of presenting a more formidable alternative ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
The initiative comes amid growing calls for opposition parties and politicians to overcome individual and partisan interests and work towards a common political strategy capable of challenging the ruling establishment.
A major issue likely to dominate discussions is the possibility of the leading opposition figures reaching an understanding on a consensus presidential candidate.
In particular, questions have emerged over whether Atiku and other opposition leaders would be willing to subordinate their individual presidential ambitions in favour of a candidate capable of uniting the various blocs.
The possibility of Atiku backing Obi could become a major talking point, given the political weight of both men and their respective support bases. Kwankwaso’s political structure in the North and Makinde’s influence in the South-West could also prove significant in any attempt to construct a broad-based opposition coalition.
However, whether the various interests can be reconciled remains uncertain, as the opposition figures have previously pursued separate political platforms and presidential ambitions.
The August 18 meeting could therefore become an important test of the willingness of the opposition to move beyond individual ambitions and develop a common strategy for the 2027 election.
With political realignments already gathering pace, the outcome of the proposed summit could provide an indication of whether Nigeria’s opposition can successfully unite around a common candidate and platform ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested presidential election.
