Sir Victor Uwaifo

I rarely do this… but like Fela Anikulapo Kuti, he is one of Nigeria’s most iconic music talents, and I cant ignore this sad news. The Bible talks about God giving man ‘talents’, He gave this icon quite a bit, and Prof. Victor Uwaifo multiplied them into several accomplishments, and even at 80, he still churns out musical and artistic creativity with unbelievable deftness. Just a few months ago, Dan Orbih hosted him on his 80th birthday and I marveled at his youthful display when he opted to give a little performance. Awesome!

Back in the hood when I was a teenager, I took a ‘flight’ with his kids (my playmates) in his self-sculptured ‘aeroplane’ in his compound. This memorial was an awesome testament to his artistry and creativity, besides his music which, at that time, was one of the very few signatures of the Nigerian music industry.

Prof. Uwaifo was a talented guitarist, flutist and an accomplished sculptor. He will never be

forgotten in Nigerian music history, for generations to come…because we dey see mami water everywhere these days.

Rest in peace Prof. (Sir) Victor Uwaifo.
