Warri-based educational institutions, Delta Model Secondary School and Federal Government College, are the winners of the fifth Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays decided last weekend.

While Delta Model Secondary School clinched the top prize in the girls’ category, Federal Government College, Warri, emerged overall best team in the boys’ category.

Interestingly, both schools from the Warri axis, that have now extended their dominance of the GCU Relays, also produced the Best Athletes, Victor Ludorum and Victrix Ludorum, in Nwaiwu Chukwunonso and Efetobore Sophia respectively.

At the keenly contested Intercollegiate Invitational (GCU Relays), Delta Model Secondary School won the girls’ 100m, 200m, 4x100m, while Novena University Staff College Kwale won the 4x400m in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

Federal Government College, Warri, apart from carting home the overall boys’ diadem and Victor Ludorum, also finished second and third in the boys’ 200m and 4x400m races respectively.

New entrant, St Louis International Secondary School, Sapele, won the Charles Majoroh March Past trophy in its first appearance at the GCU Relays.

Elated by the hitch-free and colourful event, Government College, Ughelli, President General Worldwide (PGWW), Albert Akpomudje, expressed appreciation to both ancient and young mariners for their support, including monetary sponsorship and physical presence.

“The fifth GCU Relays was a huge success with impressive attendance by Old Boys, with the likes of Chief Miller Uloho, HRH A.Z Agho, Dr. Okah Avae, Dr. Richard Obiuwevbi to name a few,” he said, adding, “my special thanks go to the main sponsor of this edition, Joseph Arumemi- Ikhide, sponsor of the bonfire, Majoroh, handsome donations from Chief J. J. Akpieyi, Prof. O. Omatete and the Onosode-GAMSU Foundation, amongst others too numerous to mention.

“My special appreciation goes to the Ejiro Omonode-led Organising Committee for the hardwork put into the planning and execution, particularly, the publicity given to it, making it look like an international event.”

He also acknowledged a monetary donation by the GCU Relays Finals Chairman, Fred Majemite, who was represented by Dr. Ovie Edomi, adding that what has become a permanent fixture at the meet, the modern electronic timing device and photo finish equipment, deployed and managed by the Delta State Sports Commission team, helped to resolve and clarify athletes’ finishing positions.

The yearly GCU Relays is an initiative of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association.
