A thrilling Nigeria National League (NNL) encounter at the Uyo Township Stadium saw Esonwanne Gift produce a match-winning performance off the bench, guiding Akwa United to a 3-1 triumph over Ekiti United FC on Sunday 29th March 2026.

The first half ended with both teams locked at 1-1, but the second half witnessed Ekiti’s defense stifle Akwa United’s attacking efforts, leaving the home fans frustrated as several shots hit the crossbar or saved by the visitor’s goalkeeper. Meanwhile, the comfortable lead held by promotion contenders Sporting Lagos against Stormers had started to weigh heavily on Akwa United’s fans.

However, at the 83rd minute mark, Esonwanne broke the deadlock, scoring Akwa United’s most sought-after goal. The towering striker later provided an assist to Oladijemi Dada for Akwa’s third goal in the 90th minute.

Coach Paul Offor expressed elation at his team’s display, voicing confidence in their winning mentality as they seek to clinch victories in their remaining two fixtures. “This is the first time two of our strikers have scored in this season, and I hope they’ll carry this form into the Abakiliki game,” Coach Offor said.

After the game, Esonwanne Gift was presented with the Player of the Match Award and a cash reward by a staff of Ibom Air.
