A former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ogbonna Nwuke, on Monday narrowly escaped death after his sport utility vehicle (SUV) burst into flames in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Nwuke, who represented the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency from 2011 to 2015, was driving when the incident occurred along the Eastern By-pass.

Confirming the incident in a telephone conversation, the former lawmaker said he was on his way to Trans Amadi when the vehicle suddenly caught fire near Hypercity on the Eastern By-pass.

“I thank God for the gift of life. I survived,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, Nwuke’s eldest daughter, Ebony, in a post on her official Facebook page, expressed gratitude to God for her father’s survival, describing the incident as a divine act of mercy.

She noted that while material possessions could be replaced, human life remains priceless, adding that what could have ended in mourning was turned into joy for the family.
