One of the mistakes we made was to make university education a political right and considered it as part of mass education. No it isn’t. University education is meant to be highly privileged, exclusive, elitist, esoteric, result oriented, transformative, tailored to provide leadership and a lot more.

When we set to proliferate universities, as federal and state governments without commensurate concern for quality assurance, the result is the present state of decadence and tales of woe by lecturers.

I respectfully maintain that university education is not necessarily meant to be a masses’ affair.

The standard of university education in terms of both access and deliverables should be so high that it takes the best and most determined to attain it.

Government intervention may mitigate the concerns of special groups but it shouldn’t be to lower standards in the name of creating greater access to mass university education as we have done in our country.

Such government interventions could be in form of grants, loans, scholarships etc And not to establish universities in every state without maintenance and quality assurance.
