Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (RMK) has criticised former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, over comments questioning Peter Obi’s political strength in Northern Nigeria, describing the remarks as disappointing and divisive.
Reacting to Sheriff’s interview on Channels Television on Monday, Kwankwaso said he had expected the former governor to return to public discourse with greater insight after a long absence but was disappointed by his comments.
Sheriff had reportedly claimed that Peter Obi could not command significant electoral support in Northern Nigeria. However, Kwankwaso rejected the assertion, arguing that Obi had already demonstrated considerable acceptance across the region.
According to him, Obi secured about 2.8 million votes in Northern Nigeria during his first presidential contest, a performance he said could not be dismissed. He added that, with the country’s current economic and security challenges, growing public dissatisfaction with the APC-led administration, and the inclusion of a strong Northern political figure who previously attracted about 1.45 million votes in the region, the “OK Ticket” remains a formidable political force ahead of future elections.
Kwankwaso also disagreed with Sheriff’s claim that the people of Kano would not support Obi, insisting that Kano voters are known for embracing credible leadership rather than ethnic or religious sentiments.
Kwankwaso also disagreed with Sheriff’s claim that the people of Kano would not support Obi, insisting that Kano voters are known for embracing credible leadership rather than ethnic or religious sentiments.
He said the people of Kano have consistently demonstrated confidence in the Kwankwasiyya movement and would support any credible presidential ticket presented under its platform.
The former Kano governor urged Sheriff to focus his public interventions on the pressing security and humanitarian crises confronting Borno State instead of making comments capable of deepening political divisions.
Kwankwaso maintained that the “OK Ticket” offers Nigerians the best opportunity to reset the country and place it on the path of competence, national unity and sustainable progress.
