The torch for the second Niger Delta Games, scheduled to take place in Edo state from February 20 to 27, has arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.

Edidiong Umoafia, a bronze medalist at the Commonwealth Games, led a colorful procession of current and past athletes from the Ministry of Sports to the Globe Roundabout along Wellington Bassey Way.

There, Governor Pastor Umo Eno received the torch alongside top government officials, the Managing Director of Dunamis-Icon Limited, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, and sports ministry management staff.

In his address, Governor Eno, represented by Commissioner for Education Professor Ubong Umoh, declared the state’s intention to participate in the games with a commitment to fair and healthy competition. The Governor thanked Dunamis-Icon Limited and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for initiating the games, which he said promote peace and unity while harnessing sports talents in the Niger Delta region.

According to him, the theme ‘Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talents’ highlights the region’s potential beyond natural resources. He commended the organizers and sponsors, urging other governors in the region to support the initiative.

Games consultant Sir Ikpokpo praised the state liaison committee for the effective organization of the torch ceremony and assured that all necessary arrangements were in place for a successful games outing in Edo state. Sports Commissioner Elder Paul Bassey reflected on the benefits of the games and praised the organizers for their professionalism.

Goodwill messages were received from the Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Elsie Anietie Peters, and the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr. Eketette Ekanem. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia, delivered the vote of thanks.

The ceremony concluded with the handing over of the torch to officials from Abia state, the next destination on the torch tour, before it returns to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo state, where it will stay lit from the opening ceremony on February 20 to the closing ceremony on February 26.
