…Our People Deserve a more secured country
Honorable Pascal Ugbome who was in Abuja over the weekend to submit his Peoples Democratic Party Expression of Interest and Senatorial Nomination Forms at the PDP Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Zone 5 has expressed optimism that Nigeria will be a better place with positive and dynamic minded individuals like him, occupying the Red Chambers and indeed the whole of the National Assembly .
Hon Ugbome was the Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2003. He was also the Chairman of Estako Central Local Government Area of Edo State from 2003 to 2006. Pascal Ugbome is a practicing Lawyer currently based in Benin City, Edo State. He has other business concerns spanning agriculture and Commerce.
Pascal Ugbome speaking with Crossfire Reports in Abuja said, “Nigeria is not working and we just can’t fold our arms and continue to complain. With the situation and challenges that have arisen, every right-thinking person will want to get involved and find solutions. It is a terrible situation of poverty and insecurity; life has lost its meaning.”
The former Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly said that, he sees the Senate as an opportunity to use the law as an instrument of creating a descent society for our people and helping to create policies, network institutions and see how we can bring to bear, activities that can uplift our people of Edo North, which constitutes the Edo North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senatorial representation.
Honourable Ugbome said he has the experience and pedigree, having been a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, where he was Chief Whip of the House as well as, being a Local Government Council Chairman . He said he had tested both executive and legislative functions and responsibilities backed up with the fact that, he is there with his people and knows what they feel, thus giving him an edge to make relevant legislation for the betterment of his people and Nigerians in general.
On the insecurity currently afflicting Nigeria, the Edo State born politician and Lawyer said that, with regards to the fundamental right to life of Nigerians and the right to self-defense, people should be allowed to bear arms after due security checks are put in place just as it obtains in advanced countries of the world. He said our people must not be consigned to a life of perpetual fear and that terror should be balanced. If I have an assault weapon and you have an assault weapon, and you are coming to my house to attack me, you will think twice. He said there must be mutual respect.
Hon. Ugbome said what is happening now in Nigeria is that, “it now pays to be lawless, if you are bold enough to challenge the law, then you rule. Those who are respecting the law are the ones who are now victims. So, let’s liberalize the Right and let everybody bear arms after going through due security checks as it happens in advanced countries and Insecurity will naturally minimize”.
Also as a way of checking the current spate of banditry, terrorism and kidnapping in Nigeria, Honorable Pascal Ugbome said he supports State Policing. He said he will work to see that the Vigilante is further revolutionized and better equipped. In his words, “we need to bring everything down! I believe in True Federalism, let us have Local Police, let the Vigilante be transformed into Local Government Police, then you have State Police, Federal Police, and let each individual who can and has met stipulated requirements, bear arms. I assure you that this whole thing automatically will be checked.
Edo North Senatorial District in Edo State comprises six local government areas which consist of Etsako West, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Owan West, Owan East and Akoko Edo. The headquarters (collation centre) of Edo North is Auchi in Etsako West LGA.
The Senatorial District is currently represented by Senator Francis Alimikhena and Hon. Pascal Ugbome says with due respect to those who have been there and who are there now, there is need for a more vibrant representation which is what he stands for.
