The Presidential Media Office (PMOR) of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dismissed reports claiming that the former Anambra State governor asked Nigerian military personnel to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.
The POMR, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr., on Monday, described the report as false and an attempt by Obi’s opponents to misrepresent his position.
According to the statement, Obi personally addressed the allegation in a post on his X handle, insisting that he never made such a statement.
Obi said: “I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue.”
He reaffirmed his respect for members of Nigeria’s security forces, particularly personnel of the Nigerian Army, for their service to the country under difficult circumstances.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” Obi said.
The former governor also reiterated his position that the military and other security agencies should receive adequate equipment, motivation and protection to enable them effectively discharge their responsibilities.
He recalled his concern over the loss of soldiers to insurgent attacks in circumstances where rescue efforts were allegedly delayed, saying the incident raised questions about the protection available to personnel defending the country.
Obi further pledged that, if elected president, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of Nigerian soldiers would receive priority under his administration.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern,” he said, adding that military personnel deserved “our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them.”
He also promised that his administration would work to eliminate situations in which servicemen and women are left vulnerable while confronting security threats.
The NDC presidential candidate urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as the misleading report and said he remained committed to presenting his vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
The POMR spokesman said the clarification was issued to counter what the campaign described as attempts to distort Obi’s messages and mislead the public ahead of the 2027 elections.
