The Omars Royal Golf League was held on December 27th, 2022 at the Ogunu Golf Course. Peters Omaruaye, the APGA candidate for the Delta Central Senatorial District seat was the sponsor of the tournament through the Frances & Peters (F&P) Omaruaye Foundation, Omars Royal Company and Friends of F&P Foundation.

A day before, after the 2022 Uvwie Day celebration on the 26th of December, Omaruaye had been a special guest at the Sir Richard Odibo Foundation Football Club final competition. Omaruaye, in addition to being the two time Captain of the Ogunu Golf Club, has invested his time, energy, and resources in sports development in Delta State and across Nigeria over the last 30 years. He’s a well known participant in tournaments at various other golf clubs across the country such as the Lakowe Lakes Estate Golf Club, Eti Osa, Lekki where he is a foundation member, he is a member of the prestigious Ikoyi Golf Club and has played various other Golf Courses in Nigeria.

This initiative and its charity tournament has contributed millions in “give backs” to Warri.  Omaruaye is also a member and a one time treasurer of the number one Golf Group in Nigeria, The JAMZ Golf Group, made up of over 100 Captains of Industry and leaders of Civil Society organisations in the country. This group has donated millions in charity give backs across the entire country.

Peters Omaruaye (r ) playing at the Golf Course Benin City, 1st left – Kingsley Okunbor, 2nd left – Edo State Deputy Governor Mr. Phillip Shaibu and another golfer.

A sportsman for all occasions! He was a highly skilled Cricketer who played Cricket representing the University of Port Harcourt at NUGA ’88 in Port Harcourt, and also at the National Sports Festival, also hosted in Port Harcourt in the same year representing Rivers State. He also represented Bendel State at another National Sports Festival. He played at the National Secondary Schools Sports Festivals, having perfected his skills at the prestigious Government College Ughelli (GCU) forms 1 to 5 between 1979 and 1984, 1985 he did his HSC-Lower 6 where by all accounts he was a good enough Cricketer to Captain the school team. He gained admission from Lower 6 to the University of Port Harcourt in 1985.

GCU was at various times during those days the National Cricket Champions, having represented the old Bendel State in Cricket at the National Sports Festival, and was the secondary schools’ national champions on several occasions.

Peters Omaruaye was also Captain of the handball team in Government College Ughelli and played for the University of Port Harcourt Handball team during Nuga ’88 which was hosted by the University of Port Harcourt.

Simply put, Omaruaye has been devoted to sports all of his early and adult life.

So why is this important? What has a candidate for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria got to do with sports development and Sportsmanship? To answer this, it is instructive to look briefly at inception of organized sports during the initial decade of our country.

Omaruaye’s understanding that as early as the 1950’s, during Nigeria’s participation in both the 1954 and 1958 commonwealth games in Vancouver, Canada, and in Wales, the United Kingdom respectively, Nigerian Athletes and teams where mostly sponsored individually or by a community of sponsors, made him to adopt this same zeal in promoting sports by putting his money where his mouth is, Sports development. He has, and continues to be a strong advocate for the benefits of sports and sporting activities in our society.

The point being made is that, there are still a few of such individuals who put their money in sports development and Peters Omaruaye is surely one of those.

The case has been made repeatedly that leadership is about service. Service to one’s community. Unlike politicians today that pay lip service to sports, or see personal advantages for themselves when getting involved in popular sporting events, Omaruaye has encapsulated sportsmanship all of his early and adult life, and we see this in his discipline and conduct which many have vouched for, including many of our Royal fathers, Religious leaders, Political leaders and Captains of Industry.

Wouldn’t it be a positive addition to have a committed sportsman as our representative at the Senate? Somebody who understands firsthand the immense effect of sports on our values. Wouldn’t it be a benefit to us if we had a sportsman to champion funding for an Uvwie Stadium? Wouldn’t it be a benefit to our community at large to have an advocate in high office for the reintroduction of team sports to our tertiary institutions?

Do we remember when Urhobo College Effurun, Government College Ughelli, and the Federal Institutions in our District had Volley Ball Teams, Cricket Teams, Swimming Teams and Boxing as regular extra mural courses and activities. Hard as it is to imagine, our schools and institutions used to participate at very high levels in inter-collegiate cricket matches as late as the 1970’s.

_(L to R). Mayor Ologbotsere, Former captain, Benin Club; His Excellency, Mr. Philip Shaibu, Deputy Governor, Edo State; Mr. Peters Omaruaye, MD, Omars Royal company and APGA candidate for the Delta Central Senatorial seat; His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, Governor, Edo State; and Mr. Uyi Akpata, Country director, Price Water house.

There is a lack of support at all levels for sports across all of our institutions because those in charge are not themselves dedicated to the ideals of sportsmanship and sports development. As a society, we’ve not had sufficient numbers of men and women who have had an innate understanding of the value of good sportsmanship and sports development to the well being of our communities.

Omaruaye breaks that mold. He’s a man of extreme discipline who embodies the ideals of good sportsmanship as well as sports development and he lives it!
