At least one member of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shiite was on Tuesday shot dead and another badly injured when the members of the movement engaged security operatives in a protest that turned bloody at Gwarimpa area of FCT.
SpyeTV Correspondent at the scene reports that the group came out in large number singing and marching down the road.
He reported that the massive turnout of protesters caused heavy traffic snarl thereby obstructing the humans and vehicular movement, and preventing businesses from opening.
Pandemonium however broke out when security operatives, including men of the Nigerian Police and Army disrupted the protest by shooting into the air to scare the protesting Shiite members.
Our Correspondent witnessed that two persons alleged to be members of the organization were shot during the encounter at the entrance of one of the commercial banks at Fourth Avenue and a few others apprehended.
As at the time of this report, businesses around the area are still under locks as soldiers cordoned the street and adjourning roads to prevent members of the group from regrouping and to forestall the violence from escalating.
SpyeTV reports that the outlawed organisation had embarked on several protests in the past through which it demanded the release of its detained leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
We cannot immediately confirm the latest demands of the group, now that El-Zakzaky is out of detention.
This newspaper also understand that major entrances to Abuja, the nation’s capital are on Tuesday mostly under heavy security lockdown due to the threats of protests from the Shiite members.
Many civil servants and business owners were forced to stay hours on the road particularly on Abuja – Keffi Road while many commuters were forced to return home because of the gridlock.
