The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, describing the victory as a significant demonstration of the power of the people and a boost for democracy.
Obi, in a statement titled “Osun: When the People Stand, Democracy Wins,” issued by his media office, said the people of Osun State had “spoken with courage and clarity” by reaffirming their mandate.
He said Adeleke’s renewed mandate reflected the governor’s commitment to the people, compassion for their needs and the strength of his achievements in office.
The former Anambra State governor particularly commended the youths of Osun State for what he described as their courageous and peaceful defence of their democratic mandate.
According to him, the vigilance and determination displayed by the youths showed that when citizens stand firmly to protect their votes, “the forces of good can overcome the forces of darkness.”
Obi said the major lesson from the Osun election was that democracy remained strongest when citizens were alert, conscious of their civic responsibilities and determined to ensure that their votes counted.
He stressed that every genuine vote must be respected and every lawful mandate upheld.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the NDC candidate urged Nigerians to remain informed, participate actively in the electoral process, vote and, most importantly, protect their votes.
He noted that Nigerians were the ones experiencing hunger, deprivation, insecurity and hardship and therefore possessed the power, through their votes, to bring about the change required to address the country’s challenges.
Obi also urged political actors to place the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations and embrace peace, unity and the rule of law.
He said elections should not be treated as battles of violence but as contests centred on ideas, competence, character and service to the people.
The former presidential candidate expressed hope that the Osun experience would strengthen Nigerians’ confidence in the democratic process and inspire citizens across the country to remain vigilant and committed to building a just, secure, prosperous and people-centred nation.
The statement was signed by Idris Zekeri Jnr, POMR Spokesman, on August 16, 2026.
