The Osun State Police Command has disclosed that singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, was the target of an attack involving Governor Ademola Adeleke’s convoy in Osogbo on Wednesday.

The incident, which occurred near the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, resulted in the death of a 60-year-old man, identified as Tajudeen Yusuf, who was reportedly caught in the ensuing gunfire involving suspected cultists and security personnel attached to the governor and the singer.

Residents said the exchange of gunfire lasted for about 15 minutes, triggering panic in the area while the governor and his entourage were at the monarch’s palace.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said preliminary investigations indicated that members of the Eye Confraternity had attempted to gain access to Davido.

According to Ojelabi, one Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, an ex-convict and suspected notorious thug and member of the Eye Confraternity, allegedly attempted to gain access to the singer but was resisted by members of his security team.

He said the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members in the area, who allegedly blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the movement of the governor’s convoy.

The police spokesman said the suspected gang members later left the area but allegedly shot Yusuf at Itaolokan in Osogbo.

“Upon receiving the information, the police immediately mobilised a patrol team to the scene, where the victim was found lying in a pool of blood. He was promptly rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the doctors on duty,” Ojelabi said.

The command said it had commenced a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the incident and assured residents that the command would deploy all available resources to bring those responsible to justice.

The police also appealed to members of the public with useful information about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or the command through its official channels.

The command urged residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
