Police Team Bombed in Gun Battle with Gunmen, 1 Officer Killed

Gunmen on Friday attacked a police checkpoint in Nnewi, Anambra State, killing one of the policemen.

According to sources, the incident took place at Omatta junction in Uruagu community on Friday at about 9am.

They said that when the attackers were repelled by the policemen, the attackers threw an improvised explosive device at the police team, and that one of them was ripped by the devise.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered a manhunt operation on the gunmen.

He confirmed that the men were attacked at a checkpoint at Omata junction, in Uruagu community, along the Nnewi Oba road.

He said: The manhunt operation led by Assistant Commissioner in charge of Nnewi Area Command is already working with the locals in the area to unmask and apprehend the attackers.”
