NIGERIA LOSES GAME OPENER AGAINST SIERRA LEONE AT ONGOING ICC CRICKET TOURNAMENT IN TANZANIA

At the opening game of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket Under 19 World Cup, Africa Qualifier, Div 1 holding in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens lost against the Sierra Leonean Under 19 Cricket team.

Sierra Leone won the toss and elected to field first sending in Nigeria’s Yellow Greens to bat.

Nigeria recorded a meager score of 73 runs all out to the George Sesay 3 wickets in one over and 4 wickets in the innings.

Obviously, the clear skies of Dar es Sallam which is seen by most cricket pundits as a beautiful day for Cricket did not work in Nigeria’s favour today.

In the Second Innings, Nigeria hoping to keep the Sierra Leoneans under 73 runs had a tough time doing that as they were outscored in 17.5 overs with a score of 74 runs for the loss of 1 wicket posted by Sierra Leone.

Prosper and Chiemelie opening bowling for Nigeria were not able to effect the needed fall of wickets to Nigeria’s advantage.

The Sierra Leoneans showed a solid defensive batting side as they kept their wickets at 5 overs with 15 runs on the score board.

In the end, Sierra Leone scored the required total of 74 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 17.5 overs

Raymond Coker was named player of the match as Sierra Leone Won by 9 wickets.

Speaking to Newsmen after the game, the Nigerian Yellow Greens Coach, Mr. Danladi Gim said haven lost the toss, his team did not play to the best of it’s ability, adding that the approach was wrong, the game planning was wrong and the boys did not apply themselves good enough because they did not play up to half of their abilities.

He however said going forward, they’ll try to psych up the boys and see how the other games come. In his words, “it is just one game at a time and this is gone, we’re looking forward to the next one”.
