BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Mrs. Clementine Obomegwolo Agodo was born on the 30th of May, 1933 to the family of Wilkey Morhe of Alaka, Uvwie local government area of Delta State and Alice Ohwovoriole, later Chief(Mrs)Alice Obahor of Agbon-Olomu (paternal) and Effurun-Otor (maternal).

Her father was an engineer based in Lokoja, under the employment of UAC. Upon the birth of his daughter, he rode his Triumph motor cycle all the way from Lokoja to Effurun-Otor to see his wife and new born baby. After the visit, he returned to Lokoja in the same manner and thereafter fell ill with pneumonia which eventually took his young life. Consequently, Clementine never really knew her father apart from a lone photograph of him, which she lost in one of the family movements to new homes in Lagos.

Her mother, during her marriage to Chief Jabin Obahor of Evwreni (an NCNC Midwest leader of the First Republic) later became a strong political figure and foremost women mobiliser and leader in the Midwest Region under the platform of the NCNC.

Young Clementine attended Remo Girls secondary School Shagamu, Urhobo College Effurun, and University College Hospital Nursing School, Ibadan. Her initial career path was in nursing. By the time she met the love of her life, Stephen Borogu Agodo, an undergraduate student at the University College Ibadan from Uzere in Isoko South local government area, in the mid 1950s this career pathway was to change drastically. The lovebirds got married on the 15th of December, 1956. While her husband (an Isoko man) was in the Federal civil service, he objected to the fact that his wife had to do night duty as a nurse. They both eventually agreed that she would become a fulltime housewife until she could learn another trade. In the mean time they had children – Kome, Ejiro, Peter Oberhiri & Enakeme Paul and finally Efemena, her only daughter.

● After the births of her five 5 children, she left by Elder Dempster Shipping wLine for England in 1964 to undertake training in dressmaking and stenography for the next 3 years. On her return in early 1967 she worked at Maiden Electronics Limited in Ikeja, first as Secretary to MD/CEO, and then later as Office Administrator. Overall she spent 18 years in the services of Maiden Electronics before her retirement.

She retired just before the death of her mother in April 1984 and consequently took over her mother’s business being the only child.

Clementine Obomegwolo Agodo was a beautiful and vivacious woman whose presence demanded attention. She loved an audience and retained their attention for long periods through her infectious sense of humour, generosity and culinary expertise which made it very difficult for guests to cut short their visits. She was a true mother to all. Her children’s friends were always welcome in her home even from their younger days, many of whom stayed over for weekends and short holidays and many became “family”. Sundays, especially, and festive periods were open days for family and friends to enjoy memorable reunions.

Her friends are from all generations and she had the uncanny ability to get them all comfortable and around her frequently.

She was a pioneer member of the Urhobo Ladies Association (ULA) Lagos branch and later served in the executive as it s President for 35 years. Until her death in the early hours of Saturday 23rd October 2021, she was the Chairman of Production Chemical Nigeria Ltd.

She is survived by children, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, as well as numerous relatives from Alaka, Olomu and Effurun-Otor including countless non biological children and inlaws from across the country.
