Team Nigeria made a memorable impression at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, earning widespread admiration for its striking green-and-white ceremonial attire as the sporting spectacle officially got underway on Thursday night.
According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Kola Daniel, the Nigerian contingent emerged as one of the standout delegations during the colourful Parade of Nations at the packed OVO Hydro Arena.
The athletes, dressed in elegantly tailored outfits reflecting Nigeria’s national colours, marched confidently into the arena to loud applause from spectators. Their appearance attracted praise from fans and members of the international media, with many describing Team Nigeria as one of the best-dressed delegations at the ceremony.
The opening ceremony combined Scotland’s cultural heritage with modern technology, featuring music, dance, digital storytelling and artistic performances that celebrated Glasgow’s history and status as a UNESCO City of Music.
Athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations participated in the Parade of Nations, which made history by featuring Para and non-Para athletes entering the arena together for the first time, underscoring the Games’ commitment to equality and inclusion.
The ceremony also featured the arrival of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who made a dramatic entrance through the iconic TARDIS from the long-running British television series Doctor Who. The royal appearance added a distinctive touch to the event before the monarch officially declared the 23rd Commonwealth Games open.
As participating nations displayed their uniquely decorated King’s Baton, the arena transformed into a vibrant display of colour, symbolising unity, diversity and friendship across the Commonwealth.
In his opening remarks, King Charles III welcomed athletes and officials to Glasgow and encouraged the Commonwealth community to celebrate excellence, friendship and a shared commitment to building a better future through sport.
The National Sports Commission said Team Nigeria’s impressive appearance at the opening ceremony not only reflected national pride but also positioned the country among the most admired delegations as competition begins at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
