Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on August 10, 2026, when a large number of terrorists launched an assault in an attempt to overrun the military position.
According to a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Captain Mohammed Goni, the troops responded with sustained fire, forcing the attackers to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
Several terrorists were reportedly neutralised during the encounter, while troops recovered weapons, ammunition and communication equipment from the operational area.
The military said surveillance footage reviewed after the engagement also showed several casualties being evacuated by the retreating terrorists. The recovered items and footage are undergoing further operational assessment.
The military acknowledged that some soldiers sustained injuries during the confrontation after part of the base’s defences was temporarily breached. Some combat equipment and vehicles were also damaged by Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) fire.
The injured personnel were subsequently airlifted and are said to be in stable condition while receiving medical treatment.
Following the attack, troops maintained a strong presence around the FOB and adjoining areas to dominate the area, monitor developments and prevent the terrorists from launching another assault.
The Theatre Command urged residents of Gajiram and neighbouring communities to remain calm and continue their lawful activities.
It also called on members of the public to promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security agency or through 07084988859 to support ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts.
The military said troops remained on high alert while exploitation of the operational area and further assessment of the terrorists’ casualties and activities continued.
The Theatre Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining military pressure on ISWAP terrorists until lasting peace and stability are restored across the North-East.
