Committee of Deans of Students Affairs in Colleges of Education ( CODSACOE) has said that the changing education policies had resulted into most challenges the education sector was faced with.

Dr Hassan Mubi, Dean of Students Affairs, Federal College of Education, Yola, said this at the 2nd National Conference of CODSACOE in Abuja on Tuesday.

The theme of the conference is tagged “ Repositioning Nigeria Colleges of Education Students’ Leaders for Global Opportunities.

Mubi said there was a need for successive government to build on policies of previous administration rather than throwing it in the bin, saying this would always have adverse effect on the sector.

According to him, Nigerians seems to be anxious in everything, wanting to move too fast than what the government can carry.

“ Changing government result to changing policies and these policies are sometimes abandoned and thus bring a lot of problems to the sector.

“ We already have so many challenges in the sector ranging from students welfare to insecurity on our campuses.

“ In other words, changing policies will further compound the problems we have at hand. So there is need for successive government to build on the gains of past administration for collective progress,” he said.

On research in the colleges of education, Mubi called for an institutional based research that would translate to the development of the society.

In the same vein, Mr Edward Akor, Dean of Students Affairs, Gboko College of Education, Benue State, called on state governors to take education serious by earmarking enough funds for education budget.

Akor noted that education must be given priority by state governors to have a better society.

“ If we elect people that have the interest of the people at heart, they will be able to legislate for improvement in education budget.

“ Our governors are also in the position of giving education enough budget as this will help a lot in the area of research,” he said.

Also, the National President of CODSACOE, Hajia Zainab Mohammed, called for quality and effective leadership in all spheres to achieve a smooth operation in all Colleges of Education.

Mohammed, represented by the administration of the committee, Mr Oluwamuyiwa Ajaja, said the need to address students welfare for academic excellence gave birth to CODSACOE in 2013.

She, therefore, urged members to continue to solve problems by mediating on matters between students and school management, students-students and students-communities in their various stations.

Mr Lugard Okonobo, Secretary, Board of Trustees of CODSACOE charged members to introduce cooperative education development financing programmes to their students to get them engaged rather than involved in social vices.

Okonobo also urged members to always engage students, leaders and and management so as to be useful to themselves and the society at large.
