COREN Reports on 10 Cases Of Professional Misconduct

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has come out with reports on its investigations on 10 cases of professional misconducts. The cases were referred to the Registered Engineers Investigating Panel between 2019 and 2020.

Prof. Joseph Odigure, Registrar of COREN, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that the cases include Complaint of Professional Misconduct, Gross Negligence and Incompetence by Managing Director of Turecc Estate and Construction Limited, Asaba Delta State.

Others are Failure of proposed Library Building at University of Lagos; Collapsed Three-Storey Building at Bode Area, near Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State and Collapsed Building of proposed Crystal Hotels Development, Ilorin, Kwara State;
They include Collapsed Two-Storey Building at Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Collapsed Gate of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State and Collapsed Building belonging to Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Plateau State.

He added that others are Collapsed Eight Floor Hotel Building Project located on Yar’Adua Drive, near Chosen Church Headquarters in new Owerri, Owerri, Imo State;

The rest are report on Collapsed formwork to the Stair-Case of a Pedestrian bridge at Garli, Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu State and the Petition on Professional Misconduct by Messer ZITTS and LORDS Nigeria Limited.

Odigure said the Panel after investigations established Prima Facie Cases against the following cases which were further referred to the Engineering Disciplinary Tribunal in accordance to Rule of the Engineers Code of Conduct :
They were the Collapsed Building of proposed Crystal Hotels Development, Ilorin, Kwara State.
Petition on Professional Misconduct by Messer Turecc Estate and Construction Limited, Asaba Delta State.

Idigure, however said no Prima facie case was established against five cases to warrant a referral to the Engineering Disciplinary Tribunal.
The five cases were Complaint of Professional Misconduct, Gross Negligence and Incompetence by Turecc Estate and Construction Limited Asaba, Delta State; Failure of proposed Library Building at University of Lagos.

Collapsed Two-Storey Building at Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Collapsed Gate of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State and Collapsed Building belonging to Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Plateau State.
He said that the following cases were still ongoing before the Engineering Investigating Panel;
Collapsed Three-Storey Building at Bode Area, near Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State; Collapsed Eight Floor Hotel Building Project located on Yar’Adua Drive, near Chosen Church Headquarters in new Owerri, Owerri, Imo State.

The other is the case of Collapsed framework to the Stair-Case of a Pedestrian bridge at Garki, Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The registrar said the council was committed to ensuring that Engineering is practiced in Nigeria in accordance with relevant Codes of Engineering practice and enforcing maintenance of discipline and strict Standards of Ethics in the practice of the engineering profession in Nigeria.

COREN was established by Decree 55 of 1970 as amended by Decree 27 of 1992 and now Engineers (Registration, etc) Act CAP E11 of 2004.

COREN’s mandate empowers it to Regulate and Control the practice of Engineering Profession in all its aspects and ramifications.
